There are two types of businesses that utilize hypnosis techniques and their goals could not be more different. Most businesses that use hypnotic techniques use them for hypnotherapy. Many people who have psychological problems such as obsessive thoughts, phobias and bad habits like smoking or overeating go to hypnotherapists for help. Along the lines of hypnotherapy are self-help CDs, tapes and videos that use hypnotic techniques to empower people, help them break bad habits or help them lose weight. Some therapists use hypnosis for scientifically invalidated techniques like past life regression or “lost time” recounting. The second type of hypnotic businesses are hypnotists who use hypnosis to entertain people. Hypnotists sometimes entertain at parties, fairs or gatherings.
